DESCRIPTION

We explored the beautiful Italian island of Sicily for a total of 17 days. We covered the first half in the north by train and rented a car for the second half, the south. Traveling by train in Italy is very cheap and comfortable. On our trip we visited beautiful beaches, climbed volcanoes, ate delicious food and discovered many typical Italian villages and towns. Of course, the ancient Greek temples could not be missing either. So our trip was a good mix of relaxation, sporting activity and sightseeing.

ITINERARY

  • General Information

Catania is a historic port city on the east coast of Sicily. It lies at the foot of Mount Etna and is therefore the ideal starting point for a trip to the volcano. The city itself is also very beautiful and you should definitely walk through the streets in the evening.

    Accommodation

We booked an apartment through Airbnb and had our own kitchen.

Mount Etna, Adrano, Province of Catania, Italy

From Catania you can simply take the bus to the foot of Mount Etna. Once there, you can either climb the volcano on foot, take the gondola or take a private van. We decided to walk up but then had to take the gondola down because of the time (of course it costs extra). The ascent is exhausting but manageable. You should dress warmly because it is very cold at the top.

      Stroll through the city

It's best to just start walking and explore the city and of course stop by one of the many bars for a cafe and a sweet treat. In the evening, too, it is worth going out again and taking a seat in the Piazza del Duomo.

In the southwest corner of the Piazza de Duomo, the fish market La Pescheria takes place on weekdays, where there is a hustle and bustle and which is surrounded by fish restaurants.

SUMMARY

Sicily is a dreamy island where you can see and experience a lot. If you are also a fan of Greek temples, you can discover a lot here. The travel time was ideal, in October it is definitely not that hot anymore and the weather is still very good.
