We were in Greece for a week and did a mix of cultural and beach holidays. Everyone who is looking for the same thing is at the right place here. After a short stop in Athens to get to know ancient Greece, we went on to the island of Mykonos

    Athens is not the classic tourist metropolis like Barcelona or Paris. Most fly straight on vacation to one of the many beautiful Greek islands. However, one should not miss a stop in Athens - there is a lot of Greek history to discover here.

    Activities and Sights

      Acropolis are the most famous archaeological sites of Athens. The city fortress is even part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will find the following sights: Propylae, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, old theaters and Odeon of Herodes Atticus You can reach the Acropolis on foot or by metro, depending on the location of the hotel. The closest metro station is called Acropoli.

      Another top attraction of Athens is only about 500 meters further from the Acropolis. The Olympieion was completed in 130 years AD.

      The city mountain is in the middle of Athens. If you climb up here you have a great view over the whole of Athens. You have the choice to go up the hill on foot or by cable car.

      This is an ancient arena for athletics competitions and chariot races. Gladior fights even took place here. The first modern Olympic Games were held in the 19th century. You can visit the stadium for € 5. But you can just as easily see it from the outside (the best way to do this is to go to the public park next to and by foot to the upper part of the grandstand).

      Syntagma Square is the main square of Athens. This is also where the parliament building and the changing of the guard ceremony are located. This takes place every hour and allows you to view the traditional guards. From here you can also go straight to Ermou Street, which is the main shopping street in Athens.

      In the Monastiraki district there are many small shops with clothes, jewelry and souvenirs.

    Transportation to next station

      You can arrive by ship or plane. We chose the plane. Mykonos Airport is just over 10 minutes from the city. You can easily get to the hotel by taxi or your own rental car
